Who we are...
The Mora and Mahogany Corporation is a business venture
dedicated to supporting nonprofit organizations through the sales of
high quality, unique handicrafts, while empowering artisan communities
around the world. The items
we import are created by artisans in Africa and Central America.
We recognize the importance of responsible trade and pay fair,
living wage prices for the goods we purchase.
This enables our artisans to support themselves and their
families with their craft.
Where
we came from...
Mora and Mahogany was co-founded by Jasmine Schmidt and
Cheryl Middaugh as an innovate approach to addressing many global and
business issues. As two
young women heavily steeped in nonprofit work they decided there had to
be a way to help further the work of domestic nonprofits, increase
knowledge and education surrounding global issues, and offer assistance
to those struggling financially in developing countries.
Mora and Mahogany provides nonprofit organizations in the
U.S. access to a zero-risk
fundraising program that not only makes them money, but also offers
their membership an opportunity to learn about and participate in fair
trade consumerism. The
products sold in the fundraisers are bought at fair prices from
producers around the world, helping to end unfair labor practices and
support artisans in developing countries.
Mora and Mahogany co-owners Middaugh and Schmidt also
donate their profits to
nonprofit organizations they support.
But
why the name?
Mora is a light wood found in Latin and South America used
by artisans to create beautiful handcrafted products such as bowls and
trays. Mahogany is a dark
wood found in Africa used in intricate wood carvings.
These two woods together represent our commitment to preserving
diversity while simultaneously promoting global unity.
